One of the new features for GIMP 2.6, that I have been working on lately, is support for reading the user manual online. So far the user experience with the GIMP help system has sometimes been somewhat disappointing. The user asks for help and all she gets is an error message telling her that the [...]

In an effort to help people to waste more trees, I’ve spent some time lately to improve the GIMP Print plug-in. The main reason for starting with this is bug #480086. Did some further adjustments to the GIMP’s image window today. Compared to GIMP 2.2, the changes are subtle. But the UI has definitely become clearer and is even more compact.

There’s this article over at newsforge that I cannot resist to comment on. It raises some good points that are worth to be considered. But it also makes some statements about GIMP development and the openusability.org effort in particular that show that the author has fallen upon misunderstandings that should be corrected.
Let me address the [...]

We originally added the fullscreen mode to GIMP 2.2 as a way to view the image without any distracting user interface elements. It was designed to be used for viewing the image, not for editing it. But since the properties of the fullscreen mode are fully configurable, people discovered that after changing some of the [...]

Last night I participated in the foundation of Open Usability, a non-profit association that is supposed to be registered soon, then becoming the Open Usability e.V. (see Wikipedia for the meaning of e.V.). The goal is to support efforts to improve usability of Open Source software. The first event organized by members of the [...]

Seriously, if you are interested in usability, you should have a look on the list of local events that are scheduled for the 3rd of November all around the world. The event in Berlin definitely looks very [...]
