Did some further adjustments to the GIMP’s image window today. Compared to GIMP 2.2, the changes are subtle. But the UI has definitely become clearer and is even more compact.

    Great work!
It’s the details that make the difference!
    Keep it up!

Thanks for all these great updates – sounds like a cliche but as a Gimp user it really makes me happy to see even little demos like this :-)

Now just dock it together with the main window, make each file a tab and it’s all beautiful and usable :)

I don’t use the Gimp much these days (haven’t been doing much image editing), but your cleanups are definitely a step in the right direction. From what I can tell, it looks like you simplified a couple of the buttons, killed the cancel button, and did something to move away the {Python|Script}-fu menus. I like it. Keep up the nice work! If you can’t find one place to take off a hundred pounds, find one hundred places to take off one pound!

    *Much* nicer! Bravo!

    /me ponders running CVS Gimp…

After GIMP 2.4 is out, we will attempt a more drastic overhaul of the user interface. That will most probably bring the possibility to have one main window with images in tabs. But there are a number of issues with such a layout and they need all to be addressed. If we had more active contributors, we would have done that already. But it’s a lot of work and we are only a handful of developers. So it will now have to wait until after 2.4.

great work as all of the 2.3 series. Gimp became already much more usable with these. I already got so used to it that I am instantly compiling the latest beta whenever I cross 2.2.

    Nice stuff Sven!

I’m using Gimp 2.3.13 on Ubuntu Edgy and 2.3.12 on Windows and I must say I’m impressed with the latest additions.
Gimp 2.3.13 is much faster than previous versions, and it really counts when working in high resolution multilayered files.
The new tools are amazing and the Tango icon set is slick and easier to the eye.
In the usability field, it’s really evolving. I still found the overlapping transform windows a little bit annoying (as I said before, they should be in the tool options window directly, like the align options, but this is my opinion). But the overall usability is by far better than the 2.2.x versions.

I have a little feature request. Maybe this is not the place, but I’d like to share it:
It would be nice to have an option for saving the size and position of the image window, just like the toolbox and docker’s size and position can be saved in the prefs.
It would be extremely useful for people working in multiple monitors or just for people who likes to customize the interface layout.
For instance: I moved the tool options to the docker window and put the toolbox in a horizontal line on the top of the screen. I’d like to open a file in the free space of the window and have it by dafault scaled to fill that empty space. Then, using F11 to switch to fullscreen and back to change tools would be fast and straightforward.
I can do the same right now, but I must scale and position the image window each time I open a file. For me it would be better to open the windows in that way and re-arrange them later if i need it.
I know this goes quite against the floating windows interface philosophy, but maybe it would be a nice option (optional, of course) to make the MDI users happy without turning the gimp interface into that model.

Gez, this has been suggested before. But if you think the idea further, it turns out that there are issues. The most promising approach seems to be handled in bug #363738.

  13. Gez Says:

Thank you for your reply, Sven.
I was talking about a more simplistic option, just save the chrome size and position of the image window. I don’t care about the zoom factor. The nearest best presented scale would be fine.
An extra checkbox in the prefs could allow to attach the image window to the option for saving windows positions and sizes.
Oh, how I’d like to be a coder to give some real help instead of ideas in the air… I know these things look easy from outsides but they are not always easy to implement.

  14. Gez Says:

    Oh, another thing:
This kind of things should be marked as bugs? I think the current layout idea isn’t a bug, it’s just the way it was designed. Somebody will be comfy with it, somebody won’t.
My question is: The bug tracker is the right place for reporting these ideas about the interface? Is there a better place to express this kind of ideas (in my case, it’s only a suggestion based on what I think it would be better, but it is not a bug report).

  15. neo Says:

Gez, you are making the wrong assumption that there would only be one image window.

You also assume that adding an extra option in the preferences would be cheap. It isn’t. Every option doubles the amount of possible configurations that need to be tested for each and every code change. We are going to avoid doing that by all means.

About the bug-tracker. Yes, it is also being used for enhancement requests. But please don’t just put random ideas there. It’s a lot better to discuss them first on the mailing-list. And you should definitely check for duplicates first. Almost every idea you could possibly have, has already been brought up.

  16. Gez Says:

No, I’m not assuming that there would be only one image window. But I can see your point about the possible problems with this idea.
And I’m not asuming tha adding an extra option would be cheap. Don’t get me wrong. That is the last thing I’d think. I said “I know these things look easy from outsides but they are not always easy to implement.”
English isn’t my mother language, so maybe I didn’t express myself right.

Thank you for your patience, and thank you for letting me know where should I post this comments (and where should I search for previous discussions on the same subject). I didn’t think the bug tracker was for that purpose too.

And thank you for your efforts. Gimp is becoming a great piece of software and I can’t wait to see the 2.4 finished. Everything I said wasn’t intended to critic the way you’re working, I was just trying to help (ok, maybe in the wrong place).
